A good website makes it easier for the right people to understand your business, find what they need and take the next step.
I design and build websites with the structure, content and search foundations considered from the start. The result is a site that reflects the business properly and gives your marketing somewhere strong to lead people.
Website projects work best when the important decisions are made before development begins.
What does the site need to achieve? Who is it for? What do people need to understand before they enquire, buy or get in touch? Which pages matter most, and how should they work together?
These decisions shape the site’s structure, content, customer journey and search performance. They should guide the design and build, rather than be left until the project is already underway.
I keep those parts connected throughout the process: planning the website, refining the content, designing the pages and building the finished site with organic visibility in mind.
What a website project includes
Strategy and structure
We begin with the role the website needs to play in the business.
This includes the sitemap, page structure, navigation, URL approach and the purpose of each important page. If you have already completed a Website Strategy engagement, that work becomes the foundation for the project.
Content
The website needs clear, useful content before it needs clever design.
I help shape or write the copy for key pages, ensuring the site explains what you do, who it is for and how people can take the next step. Each page has a defined purpose, whether that is to introduce, explain, qualify, reassure or convert.
Design
The design is created around the content and customer journey, not the other way around.
It should feel clear, considered and easy to use on any device. It should also give the business a visual system that can be used consistently as the website grows.
Development
The technical approach is chosen around the needs of the project and the way your team needs to use the site after launch.
Many sites are built in WordPress or Shopify, particularly where regular content updates or ecommerce are needed. Where a CMS is not the right fit, I can build the website directly in code.
The aim is the same in either case: a fast, accessible and reliable website that is straightforward to maintain.
Search foundations
Search is considered throughout the project, rather than added after launch.
This includes page structure, metadata, internal linking, structured data, analytics and Search Console configuration. The website launches with the technical and content foundations needed to support organic growth.
Migration planning, where needed
If a new website is replacing an existing one, it also needs to protect the search value already in place.
Redirect mapping, content review, launch checks and post-launch monitoring are included in the project. More complex moves can be supported through a dedicated Website Migration engagement.
How a website build runs
Every website project follows a 12-week timeline.
We start by agreeing the scope, structure and priorities. This gives the project a clear direction before design and development begin.
The site is then designed and built in stages, with agreed points for feedback and decisions. You will see progress at each stage, with clear opportunities to review the structure, design, content and finished site before launch.
Content is developed alongside the build, so the structure, message and search requirements remain connected.
Before launch, the site is tested across devices, key pages are checked and the technical foundations are reviewed. If an existing site is being replaced, migration work is completed before the new website goes live.
After launch, I check that analytics is working, pages can be indexed correctly and any migration-related issues are identified early. You also receive a handover, so you understand how the site works and how to keep it in good shape.
For the project to run smoothly, I will need timely feedback, access to existing materials and the right people involved when decisions need to be made.
When a new website is not the answer
Not every website problem requires a new build.
Sometimes the existing site needs a clearer structure, stronger content or focused technical improvements. Website Strategy can help establish what needs to change before committing to a larger project.
A new website is more likely to be the right route when the current platform is unsupported, the site is difficult to update, performance issues cannot be resolved sensibly, or the business has changed enough that the existing structure no longer makes sense.
If the site is moving platform, domain or structure, Website Migration support should be considered before development begins.
Is this right for you?
Website Design and Development is a good fit for businesses that need a website built around their current offer, future marketing and organic search goals.
It is particularly useful when the existing site no longer reflects the business, when a new offer needs a clearer home or when marketing activity needs a stronger website behind it.
The work is designed for businesses that value clear thinking, practical delivery and a website that can support growth over time.
Common questions
What platform will you build the website on?
Usually WordPress, or Shopify for ecommerce. The platform is chosen around what the business needs to do with the site after launch.
Can you build a website without a CMS?
Yes. If a CMS is not needed, I can build the website directly in code. We will decide the best approach around the functionality required and how the site needs to be maintained.
Can we update the site ourselves?
Yes. Where a CMS is used, the finished site is designed to be manageable for your team, and the handover explains how to make routine updates confidently.
Is SEO included in the build?
Yes. Search foundations are included throughout the project, from planning and content through to technical setup before launch.
Can you work with our existing brand?
Yes. I can build within an established brand or work alongside a designer where a separate branding project is taking place.
Do you provide hosting?
Hosting remains under your control. I can advise on suitable options, but your website and hosting account should belong to your business.
Tell me about your website project
If you are considering a new website, tell me a little about the business and what you need the site to achieve.
I’ll read it personally and let you know whether Website Design and Development is the right fit.
